about "mending grief" portfolio
These photographs were made largely in 2007, but about a third of the images date back to my time spent in Europe (2005 and 2006). Artistically they highlight my continual growth as an artist and a shift in my personal style - most notably a transition from landscapes to cemetery "portraiture." Emotionally, they speak of the process that one goes though when stricken by grief.
November 2005, my cemetery work took on a whole new meaning as I lost my grandmother and then lost my grandfather only three months later. Suddenly, what had merely been of aesthetic interest took on deeper personal meaning, and I feel that this portfolio aptly reflects that. "Mending Grief" recognizes the feelings of loss and despair that settle in upon the death of a loved one, but also illustrates that there is hope. It reflects my belief that death is only the end of one life, and the beginning of the next. While it hurts to be separated from the ones we love, we will once again be reunited in the afterlife - a fact that serves to provide both hope and emotional healing.
This portfolio is dedicated to the legacy and love of Clavis Lorhee and Ollie Ray Lindler.
